THE WILTERN - Sturgill Simpson and his band nearly blew the roof of The Wiltern Wednesday night, touring in support of A Sailor's Guide To Earth, released earlier this year on Atlantic Records. Simpson continues to reimagine what it means to make contemporary country music. His live performance features a brass section of trombone, trumpet, and saxophone, to accompany the keys, bass, electric guitar, drums, and his acoustic guitar. The band will often turn a 4 minute song into an extensive jam which leads into the next song. Simpson's indestructible baritone voice was the unrelenting force driving the performance from beginning to end, and it never wavered. There were no gimmicks at this show, no unnecessary reverb or production tricks. In fact the lights stayed the same for most of the performance, almost as if the plan was to turn them on when the show started, and turn them off at the end. Photos and words by Mathew Tucciarone.
